Training & Induction

FTS Care is firmly committed to the training and development of each member of staff in line with National Care Standards, and to respond with flexibility to the variety of needs within our service.

FTS Care has a very strong Training and Development infrastructure which is fully reflected in care we provide. Carer staff are required to achieve their SVQIII in caring for Children and Young People.

All new staff receive an initial structured induction, followed by regular supervision for the next six months and monthly support thereafter. All new staff are also required to undertake further core training within the first six months of their probationary period.

FTS Care staff have access to a range of training programmes where we use both internal and external trainers and tutors. Training available to our residential staff includes:

  • Full Induction Programme
  • SVQ 3 and 4 Social Care
  • Child Protection Procedures
  • Managing Challenging Behaviour (MAYBO)
  • Risk Assessment
  • A range of Health & Safety Training
  • Recording Skills
  • Team Working

Educational Opportunities

We believe that sound education and realistic career planning is of paramount importance particularly for the young people at Elmbank. Many young people on the periphery of social inclusion have often, in the past, experienced exclusion and subsequently under achievement as far as academia is concerned. Moreover, they have, as a consequence, formulated the view that education is a negative and superfluous concept.

We feel that by enabling young people to become Responsible Citizens, Successful Learners, Effective Contributors, and Confident Individuals, (“A Curriculum for Excellence”), they can positively and in a supported way, work through the issues of concern in their lives as far as education is concerned and as a result engage in stimulating opportunities and experience the reward of success.

FTS Care endeavour to ensure that all of the young people in their care are afforded the chance to access mainstream secondary school education in an effort to allow the young person in question an opportunity to integrate and actively participate within the curriculum.

The young people will be supported to enhance their potential academically speaking, by professional staff not only in the home but also externally. This will be done be liaising with the following agencies:

  • Social Services
  • Skills Development Scotland, (previously Careers Scotland)
  • Learning and Pupil Support in school
  • Youth Justice Resolution Team
  • Inclusion Support

Vocational Opportunities

The transition from school into the world of work can be a time of uncertainty and confusion, however FTS care will fully embrace the “More Choices, More Chances” initiative in order to provide the young people with informed options in respect of further education, training or employment.

By close liaison and dialogue with Skills Development Scotland the following options maybe accessed:

Get Ready for Work

This initiative supports young people to move into employment, further training or college by enabling them to focus on what they want to do. They will also be given ample opportunity to learn new vocational skills and build up confidence and general employability awareness. It is open to 16-19 year olds. All trainees are paid £55 per week in the first instance.
